Thanks to donors and enthusiastic volunteers, Mustangs & Patriots Project had a productive 2023. We hosted 59 veterans and 47 family members. Some came as individuals and others as groups. We attended the NC Women MilVet Summit which resulted in veteran visits and becoming acquainted with members of the UNC THRIVE (Traumatic Brain Injury) Team. We were honored to participate on a Veteran Social Enrichment panel with The Joel Fund.
We tried some new things this year such as the “Women Veterans Morning with the Mustangs.” Veterans enjoyed tie-dying, jewelry making, games, belly dancing, drumming, sharing stories, hay rides and more. The mustangs gave rides, kisses, and time to remember. The women veterans in attendance made it clear they would like to come back and we would LOVE for that to happen!
The Triangle Women Veterans MWAN Unit #144 was chased indoors by Tropical Storm Ophelia. In spite of the weather, we still managed to have a good time.
The weather cooperated for the Vets to Vets United Family Picnic. The changing leaves made for a beautiful hayride through the woods.
We supported our local American Legion by providing hayrides, costumed volunteers, and games and prizes for their Fall Festival.
Remember we mentioned UNC THRIVE Team above? Well, they spent a morning with us at the end of October to check out the program. We're happy to report that we received wonderful feedback such as, "I had a blast!" and "... can't wait to do it again. " In addition, our beautiful mustang gelding Bucky made a magical transformation into a unicorn. Wow!
This year we spoke with other mustang owners including another nonprofit. Based on the needs we heard, we are in the process of forming a mustang owner support group. Our first step in this direction was finding a foster home for Charlie Mike's Thor, a 12 year old gelding from Colorado. The video below is from the day he arrived at the foster farm.
