We love our mustangs and each one contributes to the purpose of Mustangs & Patriots Project, INC. Scroll down to meet and learn about each of our lovable (and wild!) mustangs. Meet the newest herd members towards the bottom of the page.
Missy is large and in charge or so she thinks. She is the smartest and sassiest mustang in our herd. She has figured out how to unlock her stall gate and how to score herself extra treats by performing a trick or two. She is very friendly, outgoing and will probably be the first horse to greet you. She is our “go to” girl for riding and giving pony rides. Missy is everyone’s friend!
Missy was foaled and captured in 2006 in Buck-Bald: NV403 near Ely, Nevada. She was rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as a weanling and put up for adoption online. Her photos showed her curiosity. Missy arrived here in NC at the end of November and was being handled by the end of December. She celebrated her first birthday with us! Missy is a beautiful bay with just a bit of white around the coronet band on her rear right foot.
Jessie was adopted at the same time Missy via BLM online adoption. She traveled with Missy from Nevada to Illinois to North Carolina. While Jessie is friendly, she arrived with some trust issues. The good news is she has made progress over the years! She is curious and can be funny at times. She is Butterscotch’s confidant and has been known to do some of Butterscotch’s dirty work! Jessie is used in round penning and in hand work.
Jessie is listed as a sorrel but sheds out to be a beautiful palomino in the summer. She has a white blaze on her face. Jessie was captured as a weanling in Maverick-Medicine near Wells, Nevada in the summer of 2006.
Bucky, Lucky Bucky, Rusty Bucket, Riddick … He has gone through a few different names since arriving here. Bucky is a gelding and only male in the herd. He is a bit more timid than the others probably due to his life experience. He has become more friendly and will approach you if he thinks you have carrots that you’re willing to share. Bucky likes to make moments magical.
Bucky looks like a flea bitten grey gelding but listed as a paint on his BLM paperwork due to the pink and black skin under his coat. He was foaled in 2005 and captured in 2007 in the White Mountain HMA of Wyoming. You can learn more about Bucky's tough past by clicking here.
Gracie joined us in early March 2020. She is a beautiful dark bay mustang from New Mexico. She has worked her way into the herd and spend most of her year plus here in the #3 position – right behind her BFF Jessie. Gracie spent a few weeks with a horse trainer earlier this year and is now being ridden. There is more work to do to move her along! You can learn more about Amazing Grace's hard past by clicking here.
Thor joined us in November 2023 as a foster horse. He has proven himself to be a perfect fit for M&PP. He is good with veterans and their families. He is quite popular with the mares especially Gracie and Jessie.
Thor was born in a facility in Canon City, Colorado. His dam (mother) was pregnant when she was captured in Adobe Town HMA in Wyoming. So even though his brand indicates he is from Colorado, we know he's from Wyoming like Bucky.
Until Valhalla aka "Val" will be staying with us for the winter. This beach bum mustang joins us from his home in the outer banks. He is the horse to the left hanging over the wall and eating Bucky's (blue blanket on) hay. They have become BEST FRIENDS since Val's arrival in early October.
Val also appears on the home page.
These two mini-donkeys followed us home from the trail across the street in April 2022. They were guard donkeys for a beef cattle herd but were laid off when the owner got out of the business. Visitors helped name them as they did not have names. The previous owner confirmed that they are mother and daughter. Their estimated age is 15 and 25 years old, respectively.
The Donks are very friendly. They love attention, treats and little kids. Rolling isn't half bad either. As you can see by the photos, they are always together.
I am sorry to report that we lost Mustang Sally on January 26th. Although she is gone, this sweet mare will not be forgotten! She is missed.
I am heartbroken to report that Butterscotch has gone to join her best friend Sally. Her humans and herd grieve the loss.
