Rescuing our mustangs

Some of our mustangs, much like the veterans we help, have had hard experiences. We are proud to say that we have rescued, cared for, and provided a safe, healthy, and fun lifestyle for our mustangs.

Sally's Journey

Sally was purchased with Nevada due to her being neglected. She was being kept in what appeared to be 20-20 foot muddy corral that lacked vegetation. The veterinarian performing her pre-purchase exam indicated she was about 125-150 pounds underweight hence the name “Bones”. We were concerned that she might have a neck or back injury because she always had her head down. It turns out that she was just looking for food.

Bucky's Journey

Bucky’s story comes from the woman who rescued him. He was originally adopted but returned to the BLM before it became final. The second adopter was unkind to him. According to his hero, he was snubbed and tacked up prior to being gentled or trained. A child was put on him then he was released. The child was bucked off and hurt. Bucky was then hidden behind a stockade fence where he was abused and starved.

After chewing about a foot off the top of the fence for nourishment, this hero spotted him and negotiated his release to her making sure he was fed until it happened. She cared for him about a year bringing him back to health. He then moved on to his forever home. Bucky has some trust issues and at times has shown fear with certain human movements and gestures. He has come a long way in being less fearful and a bit more friendly. He is quite sweet once he gets to know you.

Amazing Grace's Journey

Gracie is 14 year old BLM Mustang from New Mexico. She was saved from Bastrop, Louisiana kill pen in August 2015.  Gracie had a foal while in the kill pen which died due to Gracie being malnourished (1 on the body condition scale). When her rescuer picked her up for quarantine, she stopped every 15 minutes of the 2 hour ride to make sure she was still alive. Her rescuer kept her for 2 weeks so she could gain strength for transport to NC. She was taken in and cared for by Leilani Mae Horse Rescue in Linden, NC. She was adopted out for a couple of years then returned. She is now at her forever home integrating into the herd

We are so thankful to have rescued our mustangs from abusive and tragic pasts. It breaks our heart to see what they have gone through, but we are grateful to have them as our family now.
